Like exercising, it's easy to procrastinate taking the time to learn the ins and outs of using tech hardware and software. You mentioned that you listen to the iPod when you run. I have a video iPod, which I really like and use when running on the treadmill. Recently, I got rooked into joining a team at the YMCA as part of a competition called the corporate challenge. We have 9 weeks to lose what weight that we can. The culminating event is to participate in a variety of athletic competitions. I have been selected to represent our team in the mile race. Nike makes something called a Sport Sensor that is designed to fit into a particular running shoe they make. I don't have their shoe but bought the sensor and a "lacelid" to attach it to my cheapie shoes. It works with the iPod Nano, which my wife has--and I borrow, and the iPod Touch (like the iPhone without the phone). The sensor communicates with the iPod wirelessly. It keeps up with your time, pace, and distance, which it displays on the screen and pronounces audibly through the ear buds. It's really neat.
